Manchester Orchestra Explore 'Temptation and Lust' on New Single 'Simple Math' - Spinner

Manchester OrchestraBig Hassle

With 'Simple Math,' their third LP, due in May,Manchester Orchestraare offering fans a sneak peak at what's to come by releasing the title track as the album's first single. The five-minute track builds from a quiet and haunting beginning to a soaring, beautiful peak, and as frontman Andy Hull explains it, is a look at the complexities involved in infidelity.

"'Simple Math,' that song is fictional, and the verses are a kind of storytelling of what I think an affair would be like; the stirring emotion of temptation and lust,"Hull tells Spinner."The chorus is written more spiritually, so that's where the lyrics say 'What if all we thought was right was wrong?' {It's} the scary idea of 'Oh God, what if I've been believing the wrong thing forever?' That's sort of what the record title means."

The single is available for download at Manchester Orchestra'sofficial site, and will hit digital retailers on Tuesday, March 1. The album, which was produced by frequent collaborator Dan Hannon, will be out May 10 via Favorite Gentlemen Recordings.

Tamaryn Breeds Mystique at Noise Pop - Spinner

AtNoise Popin San Fransisco Friday night (Feb. 25), local buzz actTamarynperformed a few songs at Cafe du Nord to a sold-out crowd in support of last year's full-length debut, 'The Waves.' Lead singer Tamaryn brought along her three-piece backing band and carved out atmospheric soundscapes to an audience anxious to hear what this new indie darling had up her sleeve.

Dressed head-to-toe in black and wearing revealing stockings, Tamaryn kept a poker face and didn't utter a single word to the audience throughout her hour-long set but instead opted to get lost in her self-made zone of dream pop. Throughout nine songs, she closed her eyes and let her long, static hair fall into her face while her bandmates generated shoegaze proclivities.

Projected images splattered across the band on the melodic opener 'Sandstone,' but since the sound was slightly off, Tamaryn's vocals echoed to a muddled degree. After asking for her vocals to be turned up, Tamaryn's lyrics finally sounded more audible by the fourth song.

During 'The Waves,' she came up close to the head-nodding audience and sucked them into her world and they reciprocated by yelling approvals like,"F-- yeah, Tamaryn!' Near the end of the set, Tamaryn slowed things down on 'Haze Interior,' which enabled the band to forgo blasting noise for a diminished rat-a-tat sound of the high-hat.

For the final song of the night, the band accelerated allowing their instruments to blare noise without inhibitions. Once the song ended, Tamaryn and her band jumped off stage, walked away without saying anything and didn't come back for an encore, which augmented the unattainability and detachment of cooly aloof Tamaryn. Maybe the mystery will be decoded this spring when the band set out on a tour with another shrouded in black, noise team, theRaveonettes.

Tom Morello Plays for Protestors, Voices Concern Over Wisconsin Battles - Spinner

Tom Morello Protestors WisconsinGetty Images

Tom Morellohas a lot of anecdotes from the time he spent in Madison, Wis. this past week playing for the protestors fighting Gov. Rick Scott's legislation, which Morello calls"anti-union."But there's one that stands out to him.

"Tim {Mcllrath} fromRise Againstwas there, Wayne Kramer, Ike Reilly, and the Street Dogs were there, so I met those guys at a bar across the street and at this bar {were} these two big, burly Packer fans, drunken, loud Packer fans,"Morello tells Spinner of his first day in Madison."Now normally if I was on tour, these would be the guys I might sit at the opposite end of the bar; in Madison, Wis., they were much more militant about union issues than anyone in the capitol. They were leading the entire bar in these pro-union chants with their Packer gear on. I'm like, 'Man, this is a new day for America. I'm glad to be at ground zero.'"

As much as Morello, who was there at the invitation of several people in Wisconsin --"I was asked to go to Madison by the individual workers and more than one union, to come and play and energize people on the street and the kids in the capitol,"he says -- to motivate people through music he was clearly as blown away as anyone."I was so inspired by what I saw in the streets and in the capitol building, the students of Madison, Wis. have occupied the state capitol and they're not giving it back,"he says."There are plenty of students there, but these are firemen and policemen. It's like it's every stripe, every creed, every color, there are kids, there are religious groups, there are teachers, old hippies, they were very militant and wound up and it was very exciting."

For Morello, who through both his time as a solo artist as theNightwatchmanand withRage Against The Machinehas been at the center of many a political protest, the groundswells taking place now have visibly energized him and he feels there are more to come."It's only just begun. Florida Gov. Rick Scott said that he's not going to pursue anti-union legislation he was considering. In Indianapolis, democratic state senators have left the state to block anti-union legislation from being brought forward,"he says."And there were 10,000 people on the streets of Columbus, Ohio yesterday as well. There's also a caravan of Los Angeles workers headed to Wisconsin to support their struggle. This is a prairie fire that is growing exponentially on a daily basis of people taking back the narrative from Fox News and the conservative radio talk show hosts who are just shills for their corporate masters."

Morello is not afraid to directly come at the conservatives as he discusses his views on the Wisconsin situation."I think the principle reason why there are so many brushfires breaking out is because conservatives, right-wingers, used this opportunity of the downturn in the economy that was started by the super rich, the banks, and the huge corporations and has economically devastated the working class and middle class of America and they used that tragedy, that economic tragedy to try to push through legislation that will roll back decades of social progress,"he says."That's what they're doing, that's what this is about. But they miscalculated, they just thought we were gonna lay back and take it. And I think they really miscalculated when they started this fight in Wisconsin because when I was in that capitol building standing together in solidarity are policemen, firefighters, veterans, teachers, students, it's unbelievable."

And he has some pointed words for the state's governor."Governor Walker has said in this issue there's no room for compromise. He should go down to his own capitol building and explain that to the cops, firefighters, veterans, and students down there, which he's afraid to do."

There was also a personal stake for him to come to capitol and the center of the battle for union rights, namely as a father."My second child is about to be born. And so my wife and I are watching the news unfold in Wisconsin and we have a one-year-old as it is and on the baby daddy front times are hectic around here and I said to my wife, 'Honey, our boys are gonna grow up to be union men,'"he recalls."She said, 'Yes, the Nighwatchman had better go.' So I booked my ticket."

Steve Earle Dedicates Radio Show to Wisconsin Union Workers - Spinner

Rick Diamond, Getty Images

Steve Earleis throwing hardcore support behind union workers.

The legendary musician plans to dedicate his SIRIUS XM radio show this weekend to public employees in Wisconsin who are battling their governor's plan to put a stop to unions' collective bargaining rights. Steve's 'Hardocre Troubadour Radio,' which airs Saturday at 9:00PM ET on Outlaw Country (SIRIUS channel 63, XM channel 12), will spin an hour of pro-union songs -- fromWoody GuthrietoBob Dylan,Billy Braggto theByrds.

"I got this soapbox on Saturday nights, and I'm going to climb up on it and holler,"Earle tells Spinner."This is important. Collective bargaining for working people is a fundamental component of democracy, and we can't afford to let it slip away."

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker argues that his legislation is to help balance the state budget and boost job outlook in the state. On Thursday (February 24), Republicans in Wisconsin's Assembly passed his measure, which proposes to take away public employees' rights to collectively bargain for benefits. The bill now moves to the state Senate, which is now missing 14 of its Democrats, after they fled to Illinois to avoid having to vote on the issue. President Barak Obama has called the legislation an"assault on unions."

Steve Earle's 'Hardcore Troubadour Radio' show dedicated to union workers airs on SIRIUS XM's Outlaw Country station this Saturday (February 25) at 9:00PM ET. It will re-air February 26 at at 9:00PM ET, March 1 at 8:00PM ET and March 3 at 12:00AM ET.

Datarock Support Disillusioned Youth With 'Catcher in the Rye' -- Video Premiere - Spinner Canada

Thomas Brun

Datarock, the red-tracksuit-wearing rockers from Norway, are no strangers to the festival circuit, and they certainly have a knack for catchy beats and funk-infused indie-rock. The band's 2008 performance atCoachelladrew twice the amount of people as the tent's capacity, which says a lot about their following.

Their newest single, 'Catcher in the Rye,' isn't just a one-off track -- that's not their style. Billed as"the most extravagant single"in history, 'Catcher in the Rye' will be packaged in a 4GB USB stick and wrapped in a designer toy. Included are an impressive 110 tracks, 1500 concert photos, 20 music videos and an hour-long concert film.

"The song is about not knowing what to do with your life, and how that is totally cool,"singer Fredrik Saroea tells Spinner. {It's inpired by} Holden Caulfield, the main character in J.D. Salinger's amazing novel, 'The Catcher in the Rye.'"

The video, directed by Frederic Esnault, was shot at Cedar St Courtyard in Austin, Texas for Datarock's release party. The new single, out March 21 via Young Aspiring Professionals, will be supported by a world tour, which includes dates atSXSW2011.

Radio Dept Say 'Everything Good is Pop, Everything Bad is Rock' - Spinner

Johan DuncansonChromewaves

Considering Sweden basically breeds pop acts, it's no surprise that theRadio Dept.have categorized themselves as a pop band since their formation in 2001. Avid supporters of pop music, the three-piece from Lund have remained fiercely aligned with the genre they consider an art form.

"The reason why people call us a pop band is {because} we do that ourselves,"singer-guitarist Johan Duncanson tells Spinner.

"Usually people get kind of surprised that we use that term because it's frowned upon by some people or they think rock is more authentic. We're a pop group and we've always considered ourselves to be a pop group,"he says."Everything good is pop and everything bad is rock."

Despite their shocking declaration, the band's stance doesn't come as an attack on individual acts, it's more of a comment on the genre, in general. The Radio Dept. say their allegiance to pop comes from the fact the genre is"so wide"stylistically whereas, rock music, well, that's a whole other story.

"I've had some problems with the authenticity that clings to the word 'rock,'"says Duncanson."It's authentic if there's a guitar and a bearded man screaming something -- that's kind of my problem with rock music. I'd rather talk aboutRick AstleythanBruce Springsteen."

"Although, I like Bruce Springsteen,"he adds,"his best songs are pop."

Watch the Radio Dept.'s Video for 'Follow Suit'

And while they might struggle to explain their country's predilection for pop, the Radio Dept. have no trouble pin-pointing the '90s as the era that had the biggest impact on Sweden's pop-loving countrymen.

"There were a couple of good magazines during the '90s that kind of inspired a new generation of musicians–- and that might be one of the reasons,"says Duncanson."There was especially one called Pop that had a huge impact on me, ideologically and musically."

But the band still encounters fans who've labeled their sound as shoegaze, a label they adamantly deny.

"If you're going to talk about music without listening to it, you've got to make it simple for people to understand,"says Duncanson."If you can mention three bands that are kind of similar, you get the basic picture. But we still get {shoegaze comparisons} in every review, and that's when it becomes a problem, because it's so wrong.

"A lot of people were disappointed when we started releasing singles from this latest album, {'Clinging to a Scheme'}, because they were shoegaze fans."

Though the misconception may be frustrating for Duncanson and his bandmates, it also adds fuel to their crusade, summed up with the following band vow:"Let's take pop back."

Pete Doherty Self-Portrait Blood Painting for Sale by Fan - Spinner

Pete DohertySimone Joyner, Getty Images

What's better than getting an autograph from one of your favorite musicians? Getting an original blood painting. It's also a whole lot more valuable. Like, to the tune of $40,580. That's roughly the asking price (converted from British pounds) that a lucky fan-in-need is asking for his one-of-a-kindPete Dohertyartwork.

NMEreports that the fan, known as Alistair, approached Doherty, after a gig last year in Manchester, England asking if theLibertinesandBabyshamblesfrontman could help him raise some funds. Doherty offered to send him some petty cash (around $30) and a blood painting. He made good on one of those two things -- Doherty actually sent the fan a 32"x32"self-portrait. The original blood painting was signed,"For Alistair, love Peter."

The price tag is about on-par with previous sales of Doherty's blood paintings.Click hereif you're interested in buying the bloody piece of artwork or if you want to peep an image of it. Hopefully some judge somewhere in the future will take note and preemptively cut him some slack for good behavior.

Serena Ryder and the Beauties, 'The Funeral' -- Video Premiere - Spinner

Serena RyderEMI

If you're still swooning over the chocolates your sweetheart gave you on Valentine's Day,Serena Ryderand theBeauties' video for 'The Funeral' might bring you back down to earth. TheBand of Horsescover (yes, this stripped down tunefirsttugged at heart strings as a bombastic anthem penned by Ben Bridwell and gang) is emotional to say the least.

"Kevin Drewbrought 'The Funeral' to the table,"Ryder tells Spinner, adding she was all too happy to take direction from theBroken Social Scenemainstay, who produced on the disc. The Toronto singer-songwriter than passed the regins off to video director Hill Kourkoutis to create the perfect visual pairing for the song.

"'The Funeral' toys with the idea of wandering souls and the realizations that hit us when we observe the moments we live as a 'fly on the wall,'"says Kourkoutis."It is a video showing what we endure through our mistakes and growth and the journey that accompanies the former to the latter."

In the clip -- the second in Spinner'sseriesof video premieres for the songs off the collaborated EP between Ryder and her hometown rocker pals -- a young man in a dream-like state revisits the last days of a failed relationship. At first, we're presented with a pair of lovebirds cuddling on the couch and brushing their teeth side by side while sharing goofy grins.

But the love-in is not meant to be. As Ryder's voice climaxes ("To the Outside, the dead leaves, they all blow/For'e they died had trees to hang their hope") we bear witness to the final argument that lays this relationship to rest.

"The videos draw inspiration from the heartfelt, tongue-in-cheek and energetic performances delivered from Serena accompanied by the Beauties,"says Kourkoutis of the four-part project."Each video has it's own flair, its own life, weaving together stories of loss, heartache, duality and creation."

PrinceD Dipasupil, FilmMagic.com

Social media sites in the Bay Area lit up like wildfire on Wednesday morning with viral news of a certain kind of coup going down in Oakland, Calif. -- namely,Princeis coming and he wants his throne back. So far, Prince has only performed his 'Welcome 2 America' show six times, all in the New York area over the past few months and, well, we're guessing you already read all about it. But just to recap: Prince serenaded 'Gossip Girl' starLeighton Meester, invitedJimmy Fallonto sit in on drums, and playfully kicked socialiteKim Kardashianoff stage (after first surprising her by bringing her up to dance). And that's to say nothing of the music which, by any and all reports, was nothing short of incredible.

While none of Prince's conspirators for these West Coast shows have been announced yet, the New York productions featuredEsperanza Spalding(before her Grammy win),Maceo ParkerandCassandra Wilson, among many others. As Prince told reporters at a press conference back in October for the 'Welcome 2 America' tour at large,""Bring your friends, bring your children and bring foot spray because it's going to be funky,"

Brit Awards Play Safe in 2011 - Spinner

Matt Kent, WireImage

So that's it for another year -- the annual industry back-slap fest that is theBrit Awards, which in 2011 promised a re-invention to celebrate more cutting edge UK music, but mostly failed to deliver on the night.

Sure, the scale of the event had increased, moving a brief canter across town from Earl's Court to east London's branded O2 Arena -- surely just another sign of the increased commerciality of the bash -- there were no gong choices tonight to scare the horses.

One arguable upset wasLaura Marlingbeating the likes of 'X Factor' queenCheryl Coleto British Female Solo Artist -- but she'd already had the industry seal of approval when she was put up for last September's Mercury Music Prize.

Still, at least Marling never mimes and is a genuine singer-songwriter, albeit majoring in the kind of contemporary folk that won't clear the table at a dinner party.

EvenRihannaagreed to tone down her planned performance of her single 'S&M' on the night so as not to offend more sensitive-minded viewers watching the show live in their living rooms on terrestrial TV channel ITV1.

And naturally,Cee-Lo Green's live rendition of his UK No. 1 hit single to close the show was 'Forget You' rather than the fruitier version, despite it being after the 9PM watershed.

Where the wonderfulRobynshould have won International Female Solo Artist, Rihanna claimed the prize, theXxmissed out on British Breakthrough to double winner and double No. 1 UK chart artistTinie Tempah, andJustin Bieberscooped the award for International Breakthrough rather than theNationalorTemper Trap.

Thankfully, due to a change in the voting procedures this year, apparently more artists got to vote in who was going to win, soArcade Firelanded two for International Album for 'The Suburbs' and International Group. But it was arguably six years too late -- 'Funeral' was released in 2005 after all.

But now, having headlined the likes ofReading Festivaland sold copies by the skipload, they're a safe bet.

AsRoger Daltreywryly stated before handing over the award for Best British Album to safe indie-rock folk starsMumford and Sonsfor 'Sigh No More,'"This is good to see about the British music industry -- still has enough money for a good booze up!"

The safeness of the awards was even shown by the fact that due to it being broadcast live on ITV1, it finished with military precision, bang on 10pm, right on time for the scheduled ad break before the news.

Nicole Atkins' Valentine's Day Include Chili's, Motels and 'Sensual Foot Rubs' - Spinner

Nicole AtkinsLucia Holm

Nicole Atkins' recently releasedsecond full-length, 'Mondo Amore,'is an album all about love, both the good and bad. With that in mind, Spinner checked in with the Brooklyn-based singer to see what she was up to this Valentine's Day. Depending on what you're into, her plans could be a great or terrible way to spend the holiday.

"This Valentine's Day I'll be out on tour with my band on the west coast,"she says."We will drive from Portland to San Francisco where I'm sure we will all have a romantic dinner together at a Chili's, Applebee's or maybe somewhere a little fancier like Red Lobster. Afterwards, we'll all retire at the Econolodge and give each other sensual foot rubs."

Hey, whatever works, right? Even if that actually pans out, it would be hard to top an unforgettable February 14th that Atkins experienced in college.

"My most memorable Valentine's Day moment is the one with my first real boyfriend in college,"she says."He bought me flowers but what he didn't realize was that it was actually a grave blanket you put in a cemetery. I bought him a heart-shaped box of candy and filled it with weed. It was the first time he told me he loved me."

Cocknbullkid Makes Slick Pop With 'Adulthood' - Spinner

Island/Moshi Moshi

As any fan knows, the best pop music has always been created by outsiders for outsiders. From the early days ofElvis' scandalous hip-swivelling through to theBeatles' long hair and perceived threat to Western civilisation,David Bowie's androgyny andLady Gaga's outrageous outfits, pop creates a whole new vernacular that stands well aside from the blandness of mass produced reactive entertainment.

As displayed by the likes of
Pet Shop BoysandMorrissey, pop's ability to be articulate, intelligent and fun displays that it remains a medium to be reckoned with. It's an attitude that's been adopted by 25-year-old Londoner Anita Blay, akaCocknbullkid, whose literate approach to pop is proving to be a refreshing antidote to much of the fluff currently clogging up the charts. By turns witty, incisive and no stranger to the concept of hooks and melody, Cocknbullkid's new album, 'Adulthood,' is set for release in March and was recorded under the auspices of producers Liam Howe, Gonzales and Peter, Bjorn and John's Peter Morén.

Spinner met Anita to find out why it's so important for pop to have something to say.

You've been around for a while now. Why is your time now?

I've been playing and gigging for around two years as an unsigned act and I had the songs but they weren't quite there but from being signed about a year ago, it's taken me that long to make the album that I wanted to make.

Your sound has shifted from its electro roots into a slicker pop sound, hasn't it?

It's not completely stripped of electro as bits of it are still there but it's more song-based; every endeavour is me trying to write a song. And in terms of writing the perfect pop song, sometimes I do it and sometimes I don't. Almost every song on the album is that and largely I think I've succeeded. I'm always searching for that perfect song to write.

How would you describe the learning process that's brought you thus far?

I'm open to so many things now whereas before, I wasn't open to anything. I had so many things that I"didn't do"which I gave up for this album. If you want to move forward you've got to change. I approached each song knowing that it still had to have a lyrical core to it and so everything else came much easier. I've always been lyric-driven but sometimes you have producers who don't nurture that out of you because they're more about sonics. Luckily, {producer} Liam Howe is a lyricist so and he really nurtured that side of me.

So did you plot out the sonic soundscape to colour your lyrics?

Not always. Sometimes the subject matter is quite dark and that would cause some producers to immediately steer the song into dark areas but I've always enjoyed the effort of taking that subject matter into a more poppy territory. That's a lot more effective than putting black and black together; I like mixing shades. A lot of the time I go to the studio with a set of lyrics but I really have no idea of the music that will go with them and I find that that works a lot better.

Pop is seen as a very lightweight medium. Is it a struggle to be allowed to inject it with a sense of intelligence?

Yeah. Some people have described what I do as"wordy"– especially some of the earlier stuff– and maybe it was. Pop is always talked about in terms of how it sounds on the ear but if you take someone like Morrissey, he's never adhered to any of those rules and I've been quite influenced by him. But certainly those kinds of negative attitudes can irk me as a writer. As much as I want a song to translate well musical, I still need to say what I want to say within it.

Is it important for pop music to have something to say?

Oh yeah! I think it's essential. A lot of pop is there just for the sake of it and I can appreciate some acts that take that route but the stuff that stands the test of time is always from people that have something to day. Music is more powerful if there's something behind it and it's a commodity to be used in order for an artist to say what they have to say. It's probably the most effective way to make the world sit up and listen. All the great artists feed from the streets and put the message back onto the street and for many people pop music is the best way to articulate expression.

You've also worked with Peter from Peter, Bjorn& John on the album...

Sweden is very much the home of pop but very interesting pop. Stockholm, in my opinion, is really cool and I really enjoy their take on pop music. I really wanted that feeling on the album. There are some pop albums that feel really American, some feel really British but hopefully you can really feel the Euro influences on mine.

Is there anybody else that you'd like to work with?

I've always wanted to work with theKnifeas well as Nina Hagen. I'm a big fan hers and was immediately captivated when I saw a clip of her doing 'New York New York' on YouTube and I've now listened to everything that she's ever done. She's got a great operatic voice but it's quite heavy metal and it's a bizarre combination. It'd be an interesting project, whatever we did.

Ronnie Wood Splits From Girlfriend, Reconciling With Ex-Wife Jo Wood - Spinner Canada

Getty Images

Rolling StonesmemberRonnie Woodis having a change of heart. After splitting from Brazilian girlfriend Ana Araujo, the 63-year-old guitarist is trying to reconcile with ex-wife Jo Wood.

In July 2008, Wood left Jo, a former model, after 23 years of marriage, for Ekaterina Ivanova. The rocker then left Russian-born Ivanova, also a model, for Ana Araujo, a Brazilian polo coach, last year. Now Wood is calling it quits with Aruajo. Since their split, he is reportedly seeking to smooth things out with his ex-wife, despite their divorce being finalized just last month.

"Ronnie and Ana have been having troubles - and the likelihood is they'll call it quits officially in the next few days,"a source tells Britain's Daily Mail."They had a wonderful time in South America at Christmas, but since they got back Ronnie has had a complete change of heart. It's as if he has tired of Ana."

The source went on to reveal that the performer's behavior isn't anything out of the ordinary."Ronnie saw Jo this week and they had a heart-to-heart. He told her he still loves her and she is the love of his life. He realises that he has made a mistake. It's a typical Ronnie thing to do. Jo is only just getting her life back on track, so it's all very difficult for her - but of course, she still loves him, he's the father of her children, she will always have feelings for him {sic}."

Ronnie and Jo share two children: Leah and Tyrone.

Vaccines Debut Album Release Date Gets Shifted Forward - Spinner

thevaccines.co.uk

Add this to the list of 'things you expected from theVaccines.' The London four-piece have followed the template for hotly-tipped bands and bumped the release date forward of their debut album. 'What Did You Expect from the Vaccines?' is now due out March 14 rather than March 21,the NME reports.

Aside from riding the wave of anticipation brought about by their BBC Sound of 2011 poll third place and a host of 'next big thing' critical notices, the rescheduling helps the Vaccines avoid confusion with another troupe of sharply-dressed, new wave guitar wielding indie boys, theStrokes. The reunited New Yorkers are releasing their long awaited comeback album 'Angles' on the March 21.

'What Did You Expect from the Vaccines?' includes recent singles 'If You Wanna,' 'Post Break-Up Sex' and the Ramones-esque 'Wreckin' Bar (Ra Ra Ra).' The Vaccines have been garnering breathless media coverage since forming last year, helped by a scenester pedigree that includes former alt-folky and friend ofMumford and Sons,Laura Marlinget al Justin Young (previously known as Jay Jay Pistolet) on vocals, and Freddie Cowan -- brother of theHorrors' Tom -- on guitar.

The Columbia-signed rockers are currently on a tour of the UK.

Marvin Sease, X-Rated 'Candy Licker' Singer, Dies of Pneumonia - Spinner

Marvin SeaseAmazon

Just days before what would've been his 65th birthday, blues artistMarvin Seasedied of pneumonia at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg, Miss. Best known for his infamous track 'Candy Licker,' from his 1987 self-titled, major-label debut, Sease carved a niche for himself as a raunchy, X-rated singer who used gospel, soul and blues to deliver explicit messages -- raw in content but smooth in execution. As such, he developed and maintained a solid fan base that, notably, tended to be females who took a liking to his word play.

A South Carolina native, Sease moved to New York by the time he was 20 to pursue a career in music. He got his start fronting several soul and gospel groups but soon began leaning more towards R&B. He secured a residency gig at a bar in Brooklyn -- Casablanca -- but also toured heavily in the south, where he appeared to be better received. When his record label, London/Mercury, released the ten-minute track 'Candy Licker' as a single, it became something of a jukebox hit even if radio shied away from it because of its explicit content. All told, the song propelled the debut album to number 14 on Billboard's R&B chart and transformed Sease into a strong live draw.

None of his subsequent albums were able to match his initial success, however Sease was able to maintain a core group of fans and he will remain relevant as a forefather of a certain sexually-explicit blend of R&B and gospel-tinged blues.

Diamond Rings Relishes 'Freedom of Expression' While Grinding Out Tours - Spinner

Robin Sharp

The last place you might expect to find John O'Regan, akaDiamond Rings, is the laundromat. Onstage, the Canadian indie-rocker-turned-synth-popper has been known to rock giant Bowie-esque triangular shoulder pads and peacock feathers, and even his more subdued outfits consist of gold leggings, oversized tank tops and stonewashed jean jackets.

And yet, when O'Regan checks in with Spinner on a break between tour dates, he's on his way to do wash, confident the machines won't ruin his costumes.

"Right now, most of my stuff is pretty rugged,"O'Regan says."Being on the road and traveling makes it hard to bring my more elaborate gear with me, so it's pretty basic. I try to keep the tights out of the dryer, and the basketball jerseys. The rubberized lettering peals off. Other than that, it's pretty standard."

O'Regan, who got his start leading Ontario post-punk group the D'Urbervilles, created Diamond Rings a few years ago while he was recovering from a bout with Crohn's disease. As he pieced together the minimalist electro-pop tunes that would make up his debut album, 'Special Affections,' released in 2010, he cultivated a stage persona based on a part of his personality he says had been there all along. The clothes -- which change from night to night -- are a big part of it.

"Diamond Rings is not something where I'm in theKissArmy or something, where I've got this uniform or template I'm replicating every night,"O'Regan says."There's a lot of room and freedom of expression A lot of what I wear is done really intuitively, based on the weather or the town I'm going to or how I feel. There's something liberating about that. Some nights it'll be a Metallica shirt and goth makeup, and others it's rainbows and candy canes and fuchsias and whatever else, depending on the room and the space."

The transformation applies more to the stage than real life, as being Diamond Rings 24-7 would be a tall order.

"I'm not getting up at 9 in the morning and putting on eyeliner, especially because these tours right now, I'm with my tour manager, driving around myself a lot of the time,"he says."It's very much like any rock band starting out, trying to make a name, grinding out big long drives. I play it pretty low key through the day. A lot of what I do is about conserving energy and resting up and saving myself for that hour where I've got to be onstage."

Yo La Tengo Re-Enact 'Seinfeld' Episode in Chicago - Spinner

Yo La Tengo ChicagoRedferns

This winter, New Jersey trioYo La Tengobrings a new concept to their tour: let a Wheel of Fortune-esque wheel decide what their set entails. At the Metro in Chicago Friday night (Feb. 4), labeled with eight different categories like Condo F---s (their alter ego band), Sitcom Theater, The Sounds of the Sounds of Science (the score they did for documentary shorts) and James McNew's old band Dump, a lucky audience member spun the wheel and landed on Spinner's Choice, which enabled"the contestant"to choose whatever category he wanted. With game show music blaring in the background, he picked Sitcom Theater and thus the Yo La Tengo Players were born.

After the band gave the contestant an organic banana and Yo La paraphernalia as a parting gift, the band whipped out their scripts. Georgia Hubley, James McNew and Ira Kaplan all lined up in front of their mics and read what turned out to be the Chinese restaurant episode from 'Seinfeld.' At first the crowd relished the novelty, but soon they became restless when they realized the band was performing the entire episode."Play the music!"some people shouted, but undaunted, the band continued to do their comedy thing. Kaplan did a great impression of Seinfeld, and the band invited their crew to read other bit parts.

Once a 15-minute intermission concluded, Yo La came back and actually played some music -- 16 songs to be exact. Discordant beats, bongos and an organ powered up for the lengthy 'Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind' from their album 'I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass.' The band performed a menagerie of dulcet songs including 'The Weakest Part,' 'Stockholm Syndrome,' 'Gentle Hour' from their Dark Night of the Soul contribution and 'Don't Have to Be So Sad' before they revved it up with the head-nodding 'Sugarcube' and 'Periodically Double or Triple' from their last record, 'Popular Songs.'

Kaplan got on his knees and busily turned knobs and scraped the strings on his guitar while high frequencies enveloped the venue. The five-minute instrumental eventually receded into 'Blue Line Swinger.' Yo La came back for a six-song encore of mainly quiet and harmonious acoustic diddies 'When It's Dark' and 'Did I Tell You,' which made the crowd fall to a hush. Even though Sitcom Theater eclipsed the chance for Yo La to perform more obscure material, they still managed to delve into their varied discography.
