Portugal. The Manhave an unusual name and an even more unusual sound. Thursday night atSpinner's SXSW 2011 Showcase, the band made soulful, spaced-out, rock music, blasting off with a set of songs that seldom followed linear trajectories. Whenever frontman John Gourley stepped back from the microphone to wail on his Gretsch guitar, there was no telling where he might go. What was certain was that his bandmates would follow.
